Wardrobe Wednesday – my denim philosophy

Posted on

Although I like to think I’m one of those people who wears original outfits everyday in actuality I mainly wear jeans. With this in mind a few years ago, I started to buy expensive jeans thinking it was a good move price per wear. But I discovered something: expensive jeans do not equate to better quality jeans or more stylish jeans or even more ethical jeans. Now I buy jeans I like.

While on an unplanned detour at a train station in January this year I bought a very cheap pair of jeans at a shop called Vila and I have LIVED in them. So now I know we will not be staying here (a long story for another day) I thought, maybe I should get another pair. And guess what, they had a deal if you bought two pairs – so I bought two hence the slightly unconventional colour.

I think I will get a lot a value for wear from these under €30 jeans!

Outfit breakdown:

Top: hand made; jeans: Vila; boots: TradeMe; necklace: old earring of my grandmother’s. Rosy cheeks: homemade with a good scrubbing in the shower!

Since arriving in Holland with only a suitcase of clothes and three pairs of shoes (true story) I’ve been sewing like mad. I bought a second hand Singer (very appropriate) soon after arriving and what with the infamous fabric influx which just keeps on giving, there’s no reason to shop.

Today I premiered a new top. The fabric has a silk like feel and the coral colour was just delicious. Only a small remnant though so a little creative thinking was required. I’m very happy with the result.

Shoes: cheap and cheerful from the market; Jeans: free from a recent clothing swap; Top: hand made; Earrings: Peter Lang; Watch: Marc Jacobs; Rings: All vintage/estate.

As you may know I recently was given a LOT of fabric and I have been sewing madly. I made this dress which I love. Perfect for spring/summer, very comfortable, and (most importantly for Amsterdam) able to be biked in.

The navy fabric I bought in Paris. It was only €10 for about 3 metres. You can’t really tell from the photo, but it’s lined with jersey cotton in a purple/lilac colour (from the freebie sacks). The lining was necessary as the navy was very sheer and it has the added bonus of giving the colour a real lift, and making it very comfortable and easy to wear.

Inspired by Red

Bookclub tonight and at the last minute both of the other organisers pulled out and I’m flying solo! It’s one of those occasions where you need a little wardrobe confidence.

I love wearing red but this is one of those tops that really needs the right underwear, both in terms of colour and seam placement. As it happened I was already wearing what was required! Perfect.

Top – Noon (a shop in Amsterdam); jeans – Cheap Monday (a gift); shoes – super cheap from the market; earrings – from Korea (gift from little sis)
